You need to feel like you, always
While it’s lovely to dress up for your photos, it’s more important that you feel like yourself. Don’t feel pressured to wear something too formal if it doesn’t suit your style; it’s better to be comfortable and enjoy the moment than to feel stiff and out of place.
Choose outfits from your own wardrobe that you already love – those pieces that make you feel amazing every time you wear them. Comfort is key! Just ensure that your clothing is clean, neat, and freshly ironed, so you can look and feel your best.
Top Clothing Tips
Keep the tone of the outfits similar. Either all lighter or all darker. If one person is in a lighter tone than the rest, that person will stick out.
Start with the fussiest person to pick the outfit for. Once you have decided on what that person is wearing, its easy to select the other family members’ outfits to match.
Look at the colours in your house, your furniture and decor and select an outfit thats going to tie in with your home. You’ll want to display these images on the walls and if you’ve chosen a colour that doesn’t work with the rest of your home they won’t match as well.
Avoid logos and distracting patterns. These will date your images and draw attention away from your features. Keeping it simple is best.
Don’t wear baggy loose clothing. You might feel more comfortable in it, but it will make you look bigger than you are. Well fitting clothes are the best.
Spend the time on your makeup or treat yourself and get a makeup artist to do it for you. You want to keep it natural but it is a rare opportunity to take professional family portraits.
Make sure your nails are clean and tidy. Remove any old chipped nail polish and repaint before your session if you’d like them painted. Remember if you’re cuddling and holding your kids your hands will be photographed.
